IEC EN 62109-3 Safety of Power Converters for Use in Photovoltaic Power Systems - Part 3: Special Requirements for Electronic Devices with Photovoltaic Elements

EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, provides precise and fast testing services within the scope of IEC EN 62109-3 testing. IEC EN 62109-3 covers specific safety requirements for photovoltaic (PV) modules or electronic elements mechanically or electrically coupled to systems.

IEC EN 62109-3 Safety of Power Converters for Use in Photovoltaic Power Systems - Part 3: Special Requirements for Electronic Devices with Photovoltaic Elements

Mechanically or electrically coupled means that the entire combination of the electronic device with the photovoltaic element is sold as a single product. However, the tests provided in this document can also be used to evaluate the compatibility of PV modules and electronic devices sold separately and intended to be installed close together.

The purpose of the requirements of this standard is to provide additional safety-related testing requirements for the following types of integrated electronics, collectively referred to as module integrated equipment (MIE):

  • Type A MIE, where the PV element can be considered as a PV module according to IEC EN 61730-1 and IEC EN 61730-2 independently of the electronic element;
  • Type B MIE where the PV element cannot be considered as a PV module according to IEC EN 61730-1 and IEC EN 61730-2 independently of the electronic element.

This part 62109 of IEC EN 3 gives requirements for products consisting of an electronic element and a PV element or PV module. For this type of equipment, certain safety considerations resulting from the combination of these two product types must be considered. This section 3 gives the safety requirements as follows: by referring to other parts of IEC EN 62109 and PV module standards such as IEC EN 61730, by defining the tests and requirements of sub-elements that are supplementary to these product standards, by describing changes in test procedures in IEC EN 62109 and by IEC EN 61730 and provides guidance for applying these tests to a combination of PV module and electronics.

The tests required by this standard are to demonstrate that electronic devices together with photovoltaic elements fully comply with the applicable requirements of this standard. This standard requires the use of IEC EN 61730-2 requirements.
