IEC 60404-1 Magnetic Materials, Part 1: Standard Test Method for Classification

• Soft magnetic materials (forcing less than or equal to 1 000 A/m);
• Hard magnetic materials (forcing greater than 1 000 A/m).

A classification according to specific application areas cannot be applied to all materials because different materials can often be used for the same application depending on the required properties.

These materials are available in a wide variety of forms: They can be supplied as sheets, billets, ingots or forgings; as hot rolled bar in rectangular and square sections; as hot rolled wire rod in round, hexagonal and octagonal sections; as bar and wire in cold rolled and drawn forms; as hot or cold rolled sheet and strip.

These materials are normally supplied as bars, wire rods or wire in the final heat-treated condition or partially machined as castings or forgings according to user-supplied drawings, or in the hot rolled, cold rolled or cold drawn condition.
