IEC 60695 Fire Hazard Test

The IEC 60695 standard published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) consists of the following subsections under the main title of "Fire hazard test":

  • IEC 60695-1-10 Part 1-10: Guidance on the fire hazard assessment of electrotechnical products - General rules. This standard provides general guidance on fire hazard testing on how to reduce the risk of fire to a tolerable level and the potential effects of fires involving electrotechnical products. This standard explains the relationship between fire risk and possible effects of fire and provides guidance to IEC product committees on the applicability of qualitative and quantitative fire tests to fire hazard assessment of electrotechnical products. Details on the calculation of the fire risk are beyond the scope of this standard.
  • IEC 60695-1-11 Part 1-11: Guidance on the fire hazard assessment of electrotechnical products - Fire hazard assessment. This standard provides guidance for the assessment of fire hazard of electrotechnical products and the development of fire hazard tests directly related to damage to humans, animals or property. The basic principles of this standard are:
  • Identifying fire events to be associated with the product
  • Determine how the measurable fire characteristics of the product relate to the likely occurrence and consequences of these events
  • Establish test methods and performance requirements for those properties that will result in a tolerable fire outcome or eliminate the event entirely.

  • This international standard is not intended to be a detailed technical design guide, but is intended to provide guidance to product committees on fire safety engineering methods and performance-based test information needs for use in performance-based designs and fire hazard assessments of electrotechnical materials, assemblies, products and systems.

  • IEC 60695-1-21 Part 1-21: Guidance on fire hazard assessment of electrotechnical products - Flammability - Summary and conformity of test methods.   • IEC 60695-2-10 Part 2-10: Glowing/hot wire based test methods - Glow wire apparatus and general test procedure. This standard describes the glow wire apparatus and common test procedure for simulating the effects of thermal stresses that can be produced for short periods by heat sources such as glowing elements or overloaded resistors to assess the fire hazard with a simulation technique.
  • IEC 60695-2-11 Part 2-11: Glowing / hot wire based test methods - Glow wire flammability test method (GWEPT) for end products. This standard is intended to simulate the effects of thermal stresses produced by an electrically heated source to represent a fire hazard on the final product. This test method is used to check that, under defined test conditions, a final product exposed to an electrically heated source either has a limited flammability ability or, if ignited, a limited ability to spread flame.
  • IEC 60695-2-12 Part 2-12: Glowing/hot wire based test methods - The glow wire flammability index (GWFI) test method for materials. In this method, the time required to ignite a test specimen is measured when it is affected by heat from an electrically heated wire wrapped around the test specimen.

  • IEC 60695-10-2 Part 10-2: Abnormal heat - Ball pressure test method. This standard describes ball pressure testing as a method for evaluating the softening temperature and accelerated material flow under load in the ability of polymeric materials and parts of finished products to withstand abnormal heat. This standard is applicable to materials used in electrotechnical equipment, subassemblies and components, and to solid electrical insulating materials other than ceramics.
  • IEC 60695-10-3 Part 10-3: Abnormal heat - Die stress relief distortion test. This standard describes a die stress relief distortion test. This test is applicable to electrotechnical equipment, including parts made of polymeric materials. This test method aims to evaluate the effects caused by the relief of residual process-induced stress set in the molded polymeric assembly of an end product.
  • IEC 60695-11-2 Part 11-2: Test flames - 1 kW premixed flame - Device, confirmatory test arrangement and guidance. This standard describes the requirements for the manufacture and approval of a rated 1 kW propane/air premix flame for use in fire hazard testing.
  • IEC 60695-11-3 Part 11-3: Test flames - 500 W flames - Device and confirmatory test methods. This standard provides detailed requirements for the manufacture of one of two 500 W nominal, premixed type test flames. The approximate total height of each flame is 125 mm. This standard includes two methods of producing a test flame: Method A uses methane. Method C uses either methane or propane.
  • IEC 60695-11-4 Part 11-4: Test flames - 50 W flame - Device and confirmatory test method. This standard provides a description of the apparatus required to produce a 50 W test flame and a calibration procedure to check that the produced test flame meets the given requirements. Guidance on verification tests for test flames is given in standard IEC 60695-11-40.
  • IEC 60695-11-5 Part 11-5: Test flames - Needle flame test method - Device, confirmatory test arrangement and guidance. This standard describes a needle flame test to simulate the effect of a small flame that may result from fault conditions, to assess the fire hazard with a simulation technique.
  • IEC 60695-11-10 Part 11-10: Test flames - 50 W horizontal and vertical flame test methods. This standard describes small-scale laboratory test procedures aimed at comparing the combustion behavior of different materials used in electrotechnical products, when vertically or horizontally oriented test stick samples are exposed to a small flame ignition source with a rated thermal power of 50 W.
  • IEC 60695-11-11 Part 11-11: Test flames - Determination of the characteristic heat flux for ignition from a non-contact flame source. This standard describes a test method for determining the characteristic heat flux for ignition from a non-contact flame source for materials used in electrotechnical products, sub-assemblies or parts thereof.
  • IEC 60695-11-20 Part 11-20: Test flames - 500 W flame test method. This standard describes a test method consisting of two small-scale laboratory test procedures aimed at comparing the combustion behavior of different materials used in electrotechnical products.
