The test procedures given in this standard give the general requirements and measurement methods needed to characterize the level of unwanted IM signals using two transmit signals.

The standards in this series address PIM measurement, but not the long-term reliability of a product relative to its performance.

PIM interference mostly originates from non-linear sources of unknown nature, location, and behavior. A few examples are metal-to-metal contacts, material selection, corrosion products, dirt, etc. many of these effects are subject to changes over time due to mechanical stress, temperature changes, changes in material properties (cold flow etc.) and climate changes.

Generating passive intermodulation products (PIM) does not have to follow the law of the usual nonlinear equation of quadratic form. Therefore, it is not possible to calculate accurately to other power levels causing intermodulation and PIM comparisons must be made at the same power level.
