IEC EN 50050-1 Electrostatic Handheld Spray Equipment - Safety Requirements - Part 1: Handheld Spray Equipment for Flammable Liquid Coating Materials

EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, provides precise and fast testing services within the scope of IEC EN 50050-1 test. This European standard specifies the requirements for hand-held or hand-operated electrostatic spraying equipment for flammable liquid coating materials for use in explosive atmospheres produced by their own spray clouds in the temperature range of 5°C to 40°C.

IEC EN 50050-1 Electrostatic Handheld Spray Equipment - Safety Requirements - Part 1: Handheld Spray Equipment for Flammable Liquid Coating Materials

This European standard addresses all the hazards that are significant for electrostatic spraying of liquid coating materials, which may also contain small amounts of additional metal particles if work is carried out under conditions recommended by the manufacturer. This includes ignition hazards, especially from the explosive atmosphere produced.

Electrostatic applicators are considered group II, category 1G equipment for use in potentially explosive zone 2 or 2 areas created by the equipment itself. All other parts of handheld electrostatic spraying equipment are considered category 2G equipment if installed or used in potentially explosive areas of zone 3.

All other significant hazards to practitioners (eg spray of liquids, mechanical force, electrical hazards (other than electrostatic hazards), noise, explosion, contact with or inhalation of hazardous materials, ergonomics) are covered by EN 1953.

During the electrostatic coating process, the liquid coating material is transported to an applicator where it is atomized and formed into droplets under the action of mechanical forces and an electric field. During this spraying process, the droplets are charged with a high voltage of about 10 kV and a spray cloud is produced. Charged droplets are attracted and applied by the grounded workpiece.
