IEC EN 60118-13 Electroacoustics - Hearing Aids - Part 13: Requirements and Measurement Methods for Electromagnetic Immunity to Mobile Digital Wireless Devices

EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, provides precise and fast testing services within the scope of IEC EN 60118-13 testing. IEC EN 60118-13 covers relevant EMC events for hearing aids. Hearing aid immunity to high frequency fields originating from digital wireless devices such as mobile phones has been identified as one of the most relevant EMC phenomena affecting hearing aids.

IEC EN 60118-13 Electroacoustics - Hearing Aids - Part 13: Requirements and Measurement Methods for Electromagnetic Immunity to Mobile Digital Wireless Devices

This edition includes the following important technical changes from the previous edition:

  • Offers a new measurement method and set of EMC requirements for hearing aid immunity against mobile digital wireless devices;
  • The general EMC requirements for hearing aids are no longer included but should be covered by other standards as appropriate.

Recent experience with the use of hearing aids has identified digital wireless devices such as cordless phones and GSM cell phones as potential sources of discomfort for hearing aids. Interference in hearing aids depends on the power emitted from the digital wireless device as well as the immunity of the hearing aid. The performance criteria in this standard will not completely guarantee that hearing aid users will be able to use their wireless phones without interference and noise, but will in most cases create usable conditions.

In practice, a hearing aid user, when using a wireless phone, will try, if possible, to find a position in the ear that produces minimal or no interference to the hearing aid. Various test methods have been considered to determine the immunity of hearing aids.

When a digital wireless device is used near a hearing aid, the hearing aid will have an RF near-field illumination. However, validation studies in the preparation of this standard have shown that it is possible to establish a relationship between the measured far-field immunity level and the level of immunity experienced by a real hearing aid used with a digital wireless device. The use of a far-field test has demonstrated high reproducibility and is considered sufficient to confirm and express the immunity of hearing aids. However, the near-field illumination of the hearing aid (ie by creating an RF field using a dipole antenna) can provide valuable information during the design and development of hearing aids.

Hearing aids where the outputs are not acoustic, for example bone conduction hearing aids, are not directly included in this standard, but this standard can be used if precise descriptions of the measurement setups for this type of hearing aid are provided by the manufacturer.
