While this publication does not apply to products that form part of vehicles, environmental classification may also be used for some spare parts installed in the same way and in the same places as products that are not part of the vehicle. Only severe conditions that are likely to damage products are included.

The purpose of this standard is to classify the environmental factors and their weights to which a product may be exposed under the conditions of use when installed on land vehicles.

A limited number of environmental conditions categories are given, covering a wide range of applications. The user of this standard will select the lowest categories required to meet the application conditions in question.

The specified values ​​are values ​​that are unlikely to be exceeded. All values ​​specified are maximum values ​​or limit values. These values ​​can be achieved but not maintained permanently. Depending on the situation, different frequencies of occurrence may occur depending on a certain time frame. Such occurrence frequencies are not yet included in this standard, but should be considered for any environmental factors. If necessary, they should be specified separately.

It is pointed out that the combinations of the mentioned environmental agents can increase the effects on a product. This is especially true when it comes to high relative humidity or the presence of chemically or mechanically active substances in addition to biological conditions.
