This standard applies to PV reference devices used to measure the irradiance of natural or simulated sunlight to measure the performance of PV devices. Many PV-related standards (eg IEC EN 60904-1 and IEC EN 60904-3) require the use of a PV reference device. This standard was written with consideration to single junction PV reference devices, especially crystalline silicon. but general enough to include other single-link technologies.
A traceable calibration procedure is required to transfer the calibration from a standard or reference measurement solar radiation (such as a cavity radiometer, pyreliometer, and pyranometer) to a PV reference solar device.
This appendix describes examples of calibration procedures for PV reference solar cells as primary reference devices and their stated uncertainties. These procedures serve to ensure that reference solar devices are traceable to SI units as required by IEC EN 60904-2. Primary reference devices calibrated according to these procedures serve to ensure traceability of more PV reference solar devices.
The methods have been applied in various laboratories around the world and have been validated in international comparisons, particularly the World Photovoltaic Scale (WPVS).
