IEC EN 60958-4-1 specifies the audio coding format used for audio content. IEC EN 60958-1 together with IEC EN 60958-4-2 and IEC EN 60958-4-4 specifies an interface for serial digital transmission of two channels of periodically sampled and linearly represented digital audio data from a transmitter to a receiver.
Audio data is expected to be sampled at any of the sampling frequencies recognized by AES5. The interface's ability to display other sampling rates does not imply that equipment is recommended to support these rates. To avoid doubt, equipment specifications should define supported sampling frequencies.
The two-channel digital audio interface is widely used in a variety of professional audio applications that go beyond the vision of the original standard.
Breaking down the standard into independently maintainable parts allows for the introduction of additional transmission medium in the future, for example by revising IEC EN 60958-4-60958 without affecting other parts of the IEC EN 4-4 series.
Alternatively, the interface may carry compressed or a different format data or audio instead of linear PCM audio on channel B or both channels. In such cases, the valid bit must be set independently on each channel and the channel status must be coded to indicate this.
The valid bit should be set to logic 0 if the associated audio sample word is suitable for direct conversion to an analog audio signal, and to logic 1 if it is not. In cases where the channel status indicates that the audio sample word is not in linear PCM format, the valid bit should be set to logic 1 in each subframe.
