IEC EN 61000-6-1 Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) - Part 6-1: General Standards - Immunity Standard for Residential - Commercial and Light Industrial Environments

This standard applies to devices intended to be connected directly to a low-voltage public electrical network or to a specific DC source intended to interface between the device and the low-voltage public electrical network. This standard also applies to battery-powered or non-public but non-industrial electrically powered devices.

Environments covered by this standard are residential, commercial and light industrial locations, both indoors and outdoors. The following list, while not exhaustive, gives an indication of the locations included:

• Residential properties, eg houses, apartments;
• Retail outlets, eg shops, supermarkets;
• Businesses, eg offices, banks;
• Public entertainment areas, eg cinemas, public bars, dance halls;
• Outdoors such as gas stations, parking lots, entertainment and sports centers;
• Light industrial sites, eg workshops, laboratories, service centres.

Places that are characterized by being supplied with low voltage directly from the public grid are considered residential, commercial or light industrial. Immunity requirements have been chosen to provide adequate immunity for devices in residential, commercial and light industrial locations. However, the levels do not cover extreme cases that can occur anywhere, but the probability of them occurring is extremely low.
