IEC EN 61162-100 Marine Navigation and Radiocommunication Equipment - Digital Interfaces

While the specified standard IEC EN 61162-100 sentences can be used for certain functions, a new set of sentences is now required to allow transmission of all specified AIS data. The overall requirements for AIS are included in this PAS document, but the current IEC EN 61162-100 Standard should be consulted for reference data applicable to the current format.

The minimum number of fields in a sentence is one. The first field will be an address field containing the identity of the speaker and the sentence formatter, specifying the number of data fields in the sentence, the type of data they contain, and the order in which the data fields are transmitted. The remainder of the sentence can contain zero or more data fields.

The maximum number of fields allowed in a single sentence is limited only by the maximum sentence length and will always be used even if data is not available for that field.

This area is very important for defining groups of 2 or more sentences that make up a multi-sentence message. This field is incremented each time a new multi-sentence message is created with the same sentence formatter. The value is reset when increased above the defined maximum value.

Multi-sentence messages can be transmitted where a data message exceeds the available character space in a single sentence. Key fields that support the multi-sentence message feature will always be included, without exception. These required fields are: total sentence count, sentence number, and sequential message identifier fields. Sentence definitions containing only these fields can be used to create a message. TUT and VDM clauses are good examples of how to define a sentence to provide these capabilities.

The listener should be aware that a multi-sentence message may be interrupted by a higher priority message; The alarm sentence and therefore the original message must be discarded incomplete and have to wait for retransmission. The listener should check that multiple sentences are adjacent.
