IEC EN 61191-4 specifies requirements for terminal soldered assemblies. Requirements relate to assemblies that are purely terminal/cable interconnected structures, or terminal/cable portions of assemblies that contain other related technologies (eg, surface mount, through hole mount, chip mount).
Adequate insulation blanket must be stripped from the wire or cables to provide insulation gaps as specified. Chemical stripping agents will only be used for solid wire and will be neutralized or removed prior to soldering. When stripping the insulation, care must be taken to avoid nicking or otherwise damaging the wire or remaining insulation.
The parts of the stranded wire to be soldered should be tinned before assembly. The solder should wet the braided wire and penetrate the inner strands of the wire. Wicking the solder under insulation should be minimized.
Terminals not connected to printed wires or ground planes will be in a rolled flange configuration. A printed foil area can be used as a seating surface for a rolled flange provided the floor is insulated and not connected to active printed wiring or the ground plane.
The handle of the terminal must not be perforated, slit, cracked, and must not have such discontinuities as to trap oil, flux, ink or other substances used in the processing of the printed circuit board. Peripheral cracks or crevices in the shaft are unacceptable, regardless of size.
