IEC EN 61249-8-1 Standard Test for Quality and Performance of Electrical Insulation Compound for Printed Cable Assemblies

EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, provides precise and fast testing services within the scope of IEC EN 61249-8-1 test. IEC EN 61249-8-1 specifies qualification and conformity requirements for electrical insulating compounds (suitable coatings). It is designed and manufactured to achieve maximum confidence in materials with minimum test redundancy.

IEC EN 61249-8-1 Standard Test for Quality and Performance of Electrical Insulation Compound for Printed Cable Assemblies

For the purposes of this standard, the term conformal coating is used herein to refer to a type of protective coating for use in printed cable assemblies. The purpose of conformal coating is to protect against moisture and contamination and to provide electrical insulation; not as the only source of mechanical support.

For the purposes of this standard, inspections are carried out on standardized test tools rather than on actual production assemblies. A standardized test instrument refers to a test instrument coated with the compatible coating under examination and specified according to the specified test method.

This standard enables a manufacturer to qualify a conforming coating product and express its competence by standardized tests on standardized test tools under the test conditions specified in the test methods listed here. This standard also enables the manufacturer to demonstrate that the quality of production conforms to the qualification of each product.

Conformal coatings should be classified according to the cured chemistry of the coating. The type of multifunctional materials will be based on the type of chemistry with the highest percent by weight.

Uncured conformal coating materials should be free of harmful substances, bubbles, pinholes, whitish spots, blistering, wrinkling, cracking and peeling. The cured conformable coating should be smooth, homogeneous, transparent or translucent and non-sticky when observed under ambient conditions. In addition, the conforming coating on the test instruments must be free of bubbles, pinholes, blistering, cracking, cracking, peeling, wrinkles, wear or signs of aging or corrosion.
