IEC EN 61260-1 specifies the performance requirements for analog, sampled data and digital applications of bandpass filters. The coverage of the passband region of a filter's relative attenuation characteristic is a fixed percentage of the full midband frequency for all filters with a given bandwidth.
A device conforming to the requirements of this standard may include any number of adjacent bandpass filters covering any desired frequency range. Performance requirements are provided for two filter classes: class 1 and class 2. In general, the specifications for class 1 and class 2 filters have the same design objectives and differ mainly in the acceptance limits and operating temperature range. Admission limits for class 2 are greater than or equal to those for class 1.
The maximum allowable extended measurement uncertainties are also specified. This standard specifies the ranges of environmental conditions for filters to operate.
The required range depends on whether the instrument containing the filters is designed for operation in a controlled environment or more generally in the field. Band-pass filters complying with the requirements of this standard can provide frequency band filtered spectral information for a wide variety of signals, such as time-varying, intermittent or constant; broadband or discrete frequency; and long or short periods.
