IEC EN 61340-3-2 Simulation of Electrostatic Effects - Machine Model - Component Testing

EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, provides precise and fast testing services within the scope of IEC EN 61340-3-2 testing. It describes the discharge current waveforms used to describe the machine model and the basic equipment requirements used to develop these waveforms.

IEC EN 61340-3-2 Simulation of Electrostatic Effects - Machine Model - Component Testing

Test parameters are defined to test and classify electrostatic discharge (ESD) sensitivity of non-powered devices according to Machine Model. The purpose of this standard is to establish a test pattern that will replicate Machine Pattern (MM) faults and define the MM transient current discharge waveform and all required test parameters to provide reliable, repeatable test results. Reproducible data will allow accurate comparison of MM ESD sensitivity levels.

Equipment capable of verifying the Machine Model current waveform is defined in this standard. This equipment includes, but is not limited to, a waveform recording system, a high voltage resistor, and a current converter.

Equipment qualification will be made during initial acceptance testing. Requalification is required when equipment repairs are made that may affect the waveform. In addition, waveforms must be periodically verified. If a test fixture or circuit board is used to perform the UUT test, the test fixture (board) must also be used during equipment qualification tests.

UUT-appropriate application conditions will be created for the following parameters:

  • Sample size;
  • heart rate;
  • Pulse range;
  • Stress voltage levels;
  • Test temperature and humidity;
  • Related parameter specification limits indicating that the ESD test has failed.

Evaluating the ESD robustness of a UUT with electrical terminals will often require classifying the terminals into different types, eg input, output, power supply, or ground.
