IEC EN 61646 Test for Thin Film Terrestrial Photovoltaic (PV) Modules

IEC EN 61646 sets out requirements for the design qualification and type approval of terrestrial, thin-film photovoltaic modules suitable for long-term operation in general outdoor climates, as defined in IEC EN 60721-2-1. This standard applies to all terrestrial flat plate module materials not covered by IEC EN 61215.

The test sequence is derived from IEC EN 61215 for design qualification and type approval of terrestrial crystalline silicon PV modules. However, it is no longer based on meeting a plus/minus criterion before and after each test, but on meeting a certain percentage of the rated minimum power after all tests have been completed and the modules have been light-soaked. This eliminates the technology-specific preconditioning required to accurately measure the changes caused by the test.

The purpose of this series of tests is to determine the electrical and thermal characteristics of the module and to demonstrate that, within reasonable cost and time constraints, the module can withstand prolonged exposure in the climates described in the scope. The actual life expectancy of modules thus qualified will depend on their design, environment and conditions in which they are operated.

According to the procedure given in IEC EN 60410, eight modules (plus spare parts if desired) must be randomly taken from a production lot or batches for qualification testing. Modules must be manufactured from specified materials and components in accordance with relevant drawings and will be subject to process sheets and the manufacturer's normal inspection, quality control and production acceptance procedures. Modules shall be complete in every detail and accompanied by the manufacturer's instructions for use, installation and connection, including the maximum allowable system voltage.
