Part 1 of this standard defines the characteristics and performance requirements of meters.

The IEC EN 61672-1 standard determines the characteristics and performance requirements of sound level meters by specifying the parameters necessary for the meters to make accurate measurements. This standard specifies the frequency range, measuring range, measuring accuracy, measuring speed, calibration requirements and other features required for meters to measure accurately.

This standard gives electroacoustic performance specifications for three types of sound meters: a conventional sound level meter measuring exponential time-weighted sound level, an integrated averaging sound level meter measuring time-averaged sound level, and an integrated sound level meter measuring sound exposure level. A single instrument can perform any or all three types of measurements.

A sound level meter may consist of a stand-alone handpiece with an attached microphone and a built-in display device, discrete components in one or more enclosures, and may be capable of displaying various levels of acoustic signals. Sound level meters may include extensive analog or digital signal processing, individually or in combination with multiple analog and digital outputs.
