IEC EN 62061 Machinery Safety - Functional Safety of Safety-Related Control Systems

EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, provides precise and fast testing services within the scope of IEC EN 62061 testing. This International standard specifies requirements and makes recommendations for the design, integration and verification of safety-related control systems (SCS) for machinery. It can be applied to control systems used alone or in combination to perform safety functions on machines that are not manually portable while running, including a group of machines working together in a coordinated manner. This standard is a specific standard for the machinery industry within the framework of IEC EN 61508 (all parts). The design of complex programmable electronic subsystems or subsystem elements is beyond the scope of this standard.

IEC EN 62061 Machinery Safety - Functional Safety of Safety-Related Control Systems

This standard:

  • It relates only to functional safety requirements aimed at reducing the risk of injury or harm to the health of persons in the immediate vicinity of the machine and directly involved in the use of the machine;
  • Limited to risks arising directly from the hazards of the machine itself or from a group of machines working together in a coordinated manner;
  • Does not specify requirements for the performance of non-electric (eg hydraulic, pneumatic) control elements for machinery;
  • It does not cover electrical hazards arising from the electrical control equipment itself.

As a result of automation, increased production demand and reduced operator physical effort, machines' Safety-Related Electrical Control Systems (referred to as SRECS) play an increasing role in ensuring overall machine safety. In addition, SRECS itself uses increasingly complex electronic technology.

This standard is specific to the machinery industry within the framework of IEC EN 61508. It is designed to facilitate the determination of the performance of safety-related electrical control systems in relation to the significant hazards of machinery.

Taking into account the possibilities and consequences of random or systematic failures in the electrical control system, measures are given to coordinate the performance of SRECS with the intended risk reduction.
