IEC EN 62493 Standard Test Method for Evaluation of Lighting Equipment Related to Human Exposure to Electromagnetic Fields

IEC EN 62493 applies to the evaluation of lighting equipment related to human exposure to electromagnetic fields. The rating consists of the induced internal electric field around the lighting equipment for frequencies 20 kHz to 10 MHz and the specific absorption rate (SAR) for frequencies 100 kHz to 300 MHz.

Included in this standard are:

• All lighting equipment whose primary function is to produce and/or distribute light for lighting purposes and for connection to a low voltage electricity source or for battery operation; used indoors or outdoors;
• Lighting part of multifunctional equipment, where one of its primary functions is lighting;
• Independent aids for use exclusively with lighting equipment;
• Lighting equipment, including deliberate radiators for wireless communication or control.

This International standard establishes a suitable method of assessment for the influence of electromagnetic fields in the space around the scoped equipment and defines standardized operating conditions and measuring distances. This standard is not intended to replace the definitions and procedures set out in exposure standards, but to supplement the already specified procedure for exposure compliance.

Measurements on lighting equipment should be made under the operating conditions specified by the manufacturer. In the case of lighting equipment where it is possible to replace lamps with different rated power, it is only necessary to measure the lighting equipment together with the lamp with the highest rated lamp voltage.
