IEC EN 62580-1 Electronic Railway Equipment - Embedded Multimedia and Telematics Subsystems for Railways - Part 1: General Architecture

EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, provides precise and fast testing services within the scope of IEC EN 62580-1 test. IEC EN 62580-1 defines the overall architecture of Onboard Multimedia and Telematics Subsystems (OMTS) to ensure compatibility between subsystems in the same vehicle and between subsystems in different vehicles on the same train.

IEC EN 62580-1 Electronic Railway Equipment - Embedded Multimedia and Telematics Subsystems for Railways - Part 1: General Architecture

IEC EN 62580-1 specifies the overall architecture of the Embedded Multimedia and Telematics Subsystem (OMTS), which includes four categories of multimedia and telematics subsystems defined as:

  • Video surveillance/CCTV;
  • Driver and crew focused services;
  • Passenger oriented services;
  • Train operator and maintenance oriented services.

This section specifies:

  • The boundary between OMTS and the embedded communication system, as described by the IEC 61375 series;
  • The methodology for describing an OMTS in terms of the abstract model;
  • Services provided/needed by each category to specify general principles and key requirements;
  • The approach to ensuring interoperability between services.

The main benefit of the service approach is to separate applications from communication aspects to ensure that applications that comply with the IEC 62580 series are compatible with protocols that comply with the IEC 61375 series regardless of possible changes in the two series of standards.

Services provide access to functions and present them through a standard interface according to a general model for each subsystem, but should not go into details of the implementation of the functions and subsystems themselves.

This standard specifies how an embedded multimedia application should be defined in terms of certain services and messages it can produce/consume. This specification assumes that a communication mechanism is in place that allows the transfer of messages between services as needed. Consequently, this standard does not cover any specification of the communication mechanism, assuming it is specified by the IEC 61375 series. Obviously, some minimum requirements of OMTS services will be met by this mechanism.
