IEC EN 62610-1 Mechanical Structures for Electronic Equipment - Part 1: Interface Size and Provision for Thermoelectric Cooling Systems

Three typical mounting positions are defined:

• Cabinet with thermoelectric cooling system installed inside or outside for cooling the entire cabinet;
• Cabinet with top mounted thermoelectric cooling system for cooling the entire cabinet;
• Cabinet with built-in thermoelectric cooling system in the form of a bottom shelf for hot spot cooling.

Both cooling and heating are becoming more and more important today and the total amount of heat transferred is increasing every year. The range of cooling applications is very wide, such as in home refrigerators, water dispensers in the office, mini bars in hotel rooms, air conditioners in cars, trains and buses, cold storage in supermarkets, dry ice cream in the food industry, server rooms.

The Peltier effect looks very promising, as the cooling effect largely depends on the properties of the material. The newly tested materials based on porous materials or nanostructures show an improvement in efficiency. Also, Peltier techniques do not need any cooling liquid and only the fans move.

The absorption technique is a very clever way of cooling, but is only profitable in combination with a heat regenerator, which makes the absorption cooling system only possible in very few applications.
