IEC EN 62610-5 Mechanical Structures for Electrical and Electronic Equipment - Thermal Management for Cabinets Compliant with IEC 60297 and IEC 60917 Series - Part 5: Cooling Performance Evaluation for Indoor Cabinets

EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, provides precise and fast testing services within the scope of IEC EN 62610-5 testing. Specifies a method for evaluating the cooling capacity for air convection cooling of essentially empty cabinets, in accordance with the IEC EN 62610-5, IEC 60297 and IEC 60917 series.

IEC EN 62610-5 Mechanical Structures for Electrical and Electronic Equipment - Thermal Management for Cabinets Compliant with IEC 60297 and IEC 60917 Series - Part 5: Cooling Performance Evaluation for Indoor Cabinets

The purpose of this standard is to classify the cooling methods of empty indoor cabinets, to simplify the thermal hydraulic formulas for the evaluation and classification of cabinet cooling performances, and to exemplify the cooling performances for representative cabinet sizes based on IEC 60917 or IEC 60297. This allows users to select suitable cabinet cooling solutions for their application.

Inner cabinets containing electronic equipment in lower racks or in the chassis provide cooling in several different ways, depending on the heat load of the equipment inside the cabinet. In most cases, air convection is used for cooling. Cabinets can be sealed or sealed and equipped with fans for forced air cooling, or rely on fanless natural conventional cooling.

Additionally the lower racks or chassis may contain their own fans or rely on natural convention. Air convection systems are used to cool low to medium heat load applications. Interior cabinets containing chassis combined with lower racks or high heat load electronic equipment are typically cooled by air-to-air heat exchangers or water source heat exchangers and are not considered in this standard.

Sealed cabinets are used in systems operated in an industrial atmosphere to protect equipment against harsh environments such as dust or water (IP) or EMC or acoustic noise provisions. Sealed cabinets are used in offices, laboratories or data centers where the environment is controlled.

The cooling performance of an electronics cabinet depends on the cabinet type, sealed or sealed, with or without air handling devices, ventilated or circulated, as well as heat loads and additional cooling systems (if applicable).
