This part of IEC EN 62751 gives the detailed method to be adopted for calculating the power losses in the valves for an HVDC system based on the “modular multi-level converter”, where each valve in the converter consists of a series of independent, two-terminal controllable voltage sources connected in series. This applies both to cases where each modular cell uses only a single closing semiconductor device at each switch position, and where each switch position consists of a series of closing semiconductor devices in series (topology is also "cascade bi-level converter") .

The standard is primarily written for insulated-gate bipolar transistors (IGBTs), but can also be used as a guideline if other shutdown semiconductor devices are used. Power losses in equipment items other than converter valves in the HVDC station are outside the scope of this standard.

This standard does not apply to converter valves for line change converter HVDC.

In practice, this measurement will require the use of state-of-the-art measuring equipment that competes with the best available at national metrology institutes. To date, there is little industry experience in using such equipment in the field, although some industry/academic partnership projects have demonstrated prototypes of measuring equipment that claim adequate accuracy.
