The IEEE STD 299 standard defines uniform measurement procedures and techniques for determining the effectiveness of electromagnetic shielding enclosures at frequencies from 2 kHz to 9 GHz (expandable to 18 Hz and 50 GHz, respectively) for enclosures of all dimensions greater than or equal to 100.

Types of enclosures covered include, but are not limited to, single-shielded or double-shielded structures of various structures such as bolted, detachable, welded, or integral with a building; and made of materials such as steel plate, copper or aluminum plate, screening, hardware cloth, metal foil or shielding cloths.

According to IEEE STD 299, the test requires placing the transmit and receive loops approximately 0,3 m from the respective protective barrier. The generator output is kept at the level used during the reference measurement and is applied at every frequency and location.

During all low-frequency measurements, one loop remains in a fixed position and the second loop is repositioned and swapped to look for the worst-case measurement. The maximum indication of the detector reading will be used to determine shielding effectiveness.
