To perform this test method, the electronics module, together with its wiring (prototype or standard test rig) and peripheral devices, will be exposed to electromagnetic interference produced by a parallel plate antenna in a shielded enclosure. The electromagnetic disturbances considered in this part of ISO 11452 are limited to continuous narrowband electromagnetic fields.

Immunity measurements of full vehicles are usually only possible by the vehicle manufacturer, for example, because of the high costs of an absorbent-lined chamber that protects the privacy of prototypes, or the large number of different vehicle models. For this reason, laboratory measurement methods are used by the manufacturer for research, development and quality control.

The test involves generating radiated electric fields using a parallel-plate antenna with radio frequency (RF) sources capable of generating the desired field strengths in the range of test frequencies. Areas will be monitored with small probes to ensure appropriate test levels. To reduce test error, the device under test should be monitored by optical couplers.

Before performing the tests, a test plan must be prepared; shall include the interface test points, the mode of operation of the device under test, the acceptance criteria of the device under test, and any special instructions and modifications of the standard test. Each tested device should be validated under the most critical conditions, i.e. at least in standby mode and in a mode in which all actuators can be excited.
