Protection in Cloudy and Foggy Weather (ISO 12312)

The ISO 12312 standard has been designed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) to describe the fog protection properties and test methods of sunglasses and similar glasses within the scope of eye and face protection equipment. This standard has been published in our country by the Turkish Standards Institute (TSE) with the following headings:

• TS EN ISO 12312-1 Eye and face protection - Sunglasses and similar glasses - Part 1: Sunglasses for general use
• TS EN ISO 12312-2 Eye and face protection - Sunglasses and similar goggles - Part 2: Filters for direct observation of the sun

Glasses designed and manufactured according to the ISO 12312 standard provide versatile protection, especially if the weather is cloudy or foggy or if it is snowing. This standard specifies three categories:

• Category 1: Provides 80 percent to 100 percent light (protection in sunny weather)
• Category 2: Provides 43 percent to 80 percent light (protection in cloudy and foggy weather)
• Category 3: Provides 8 percent to 18 percent light (sunny weather protection, full UV protection filter)

Temperature fluctuations require foggy glasses.

The basic requirements in the ISO 12312 standard are given under the following headings: building materials, permeability, refractive strength, strength, resistance to solar radiation, fire resistance, wear resistance (optional features), protective requirements and information and labeling.

This new standard covers many requirements such as light transmittance, UV and refractive power requirements, wide angle scattering, not exceeding 3 percent at the reference point with a haze meter, increased durability of sunglasses, impact resistance of the filter, resistance to abrasion and defined protective coverage.
