Optical power is the value at which a lens, mirror, or other optical system brings light closer or further away. Optical power is also called dioptric power, refractive power, focusing power or convergence power. Convergent lenses have positive optical power whereas divergent lenses have negative power.
When a lens is in a refractive environment, its optical power and focal length change. For two or more thin lenses close together, as in eyeglasses, the optical power of the lenses is approximately equal to the sum of the optical powers of each lens.
An eye with too much or too little refractive power to focus light on the retina has a refractive value. A myopic eye has a lot of power, so the light is focused in front of the retina. In contrast, a hyperopic eye has very little power, so the light is focused behind the retina.
