The ANSI Z87.1 standard was designed by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) to describe the refractive strength characteristics and test methods of sunglasses and similar glasses. In our country, a standard has been published by the Turkish Standards Institute (TSE), based on the EN 167 standard, which is a European standard in this regard, with the following title: TS EN 167 Personal eye protection - Optical test methods.

The ANSI Z87.1 standard published within the scope of eye and face protection devices helps to eliminate eye and face hazards in working environments. For this purpose, it describes the criteria and conditions for the selection, use and care of different face and eye protection equipment in order to introduce the most effective materials and usage methods.
This standard helps the personal eye and face protection equipment provide adequate protection against impact, non-ionizing radiation and liquid splash exposures. After this standard was published, it was updated twice in 2010 and 2015. These updates focus on product performance and try to comply with international standards, taking into account the dangers in the working environment and user requirements on the one hand, and the obligations imposed by the legal regulations in force on the other.
The ANSI Z87.1 standard focuses on safety goggles that best represent the protection required for hazards encountered in the work environment. The most common dangers can be listed as follows: blunt effect (sudden and severe impact on the body), radiation, splashes and droplets, large and small dust particles.
Tests are carried out to ensure that safety glasses protect the eyes as expected. These tests mainly include: high impact resistance testing for lenses and frames, non-ionizing radiation and chemical exposure testing, and flammability and corrosion resistance testing.
