Surface Damage Due to Small Particles (EN 168)

The EN 168 standard, a European standard, describes the characteristics and test methods of damage caused by small non-optically related particles in eyeglass lenses. This standard has been published in our country by the Turkish Standards Institute (TSE) with the following title: TS 5558 EN 168 Personal eye protection - Non-optical test methods.

Surface Damage Due to Small Particles (EN 168)

The eyes are the most important and sensitive sense organ. Approximately 90 percent of all perception is with the eyes. The protection provided by the body's natural features such as eyelashes, tears, eyelids and blink reflex is rarely sufficient in the industrial world. If the risks in the working environment cannot be completely eliminated by technical and operational processes, it is necessary to use personal protective equipment. In accordance with the legal regulations in force, it is the responsibility of the enterprises to analyze the hazards in the working environment and the enterprises have to give the protective glasses to the employees free of charge when necessary.

EN 168 and other personal protective equipment standards aim to help businesses fulfill their obligations in this direction. These standards are aimed at preventing the accidents, diseases and health hazards that employees will encounter with their activities. In this respect, the protective glasses offered to the market must bear the CE mark in accordance with the legal regulations in force.

The basic standard for glasses intended to be used as personal protective equipment in workplaces is generally EN 166. In addition, optical test methods for protective glasses are described in EN 167 standard and non-optical test methods in EN 168 standard.

Basic requirements include visual field, diffusion, refractive properties, toughness, resistance to aging (stability against heat and resistance to ultraviolet rays), corrosion and ignition assessments.
