The estimation of the net heat of combustion of hydrocarbon fuel from the aniline-gravity product can only be verified when the fuel belongs to a well-defined type from which the relationship between heat of combustion and aniline-gravity product is derived from accurate experimental measurements. Even in this case, the possibility of large inaccuracies in the estimates for individual fuels must be acknowledged.
