ISO 6059 Water Quality - Determination of Calcium and Magnesium Sum Edta Titrimetric Method

The standard is not designed for wastewater and waters containing high concentrations of salt. The lowest concentration that can be determined is 0,05 mmol/l.

It is the soap precipitating capacity of the water, resulting mainly from the dissolved calcium or magnesium salts in a water's hardness. Soap is precipitated by the calcium and magnesium ions that are always present in the water. But this precipitation is also produced by polyvalent metals such as Fe, Al, Mn and Zn, and by hydrogen ions.

Hardness is expressed as the total concentration of calcium and magnesium ions in terms of calcium carbonate. However, it may also include other hardening ions present in demonstrable amounts.
