Particle sizes equal to or greater than 2 micrometers can be sized and counted with this method, but the resolution and accuracy of the results will depend on the optical system used and the capabilities of the operator.

However, in cases where a fine precipitate or a high particle concentration is present, the counting uncertainty increases at larger particle sizes if the filtered volume is reduced to allow smaller sized particles to be counted.
