The EN 352-1 standard does not include ear muffs for fitting to a helmet or as part of a helmet. Ergonomic considerations are addressed within the requirements, taking into account the user, the device and, where possible, the working environment in which the device is used.

To meet EN 352 standards, hearing protection is mainly tested in the following areas, depending on product type: materials and construction, sizing and adjustability, headband strength, change in headband strength, cushion pressure, resistance to damage when dropped, resistance to leakage, flammability, minimum attenuation, marking and information provided by the manufacturer.

Today, millions of employees are exposed to excessive noise in their work environments. Many employees therefore suffer from hearing loss, tinnitus and other ailments that permanently affect their quality of life. Businesses must provide their employees with the right hearing protection, as serious health problems are at stake.

According to the relevant legal regulations, the level of exposure to which hearing protection should be provided is 85 decibels per day. Where noise levels exceed 85 decibels, appropriate hearing protection must be provided. The exposure limit is 87 decibels. Employees should not be exposed to noise levels exceeding 87 decibels, whether or not they use protective earplugs.

The EN 352 standard refers to the EN 13819 standard on test methods (TS EN 13819 Hearing protectors - Tests). This standard covers test methods common to all hearing protectors within the EN 352 series and consists of two parts:

  • Part 1: Physical test methods
  • Part 2: Acoustic test methods
