The standard describes two chemical methods for the determination of dissolved fluoride in drinking water, surface water and wastewater. The first method works directly with the fluoride ion selective electrode and is mainly used for drinking water and surface waters with fluoride concentrations from 0,2 to 2000 mg/l.

The second method works by cracking with sodium hydroxide followed by steam distillation of the fluoride. The fluoride will then be determined in the distillate by the fluoride ion selective electrode. The method is suitable for highly loaded wastewater with a fluoride concentration higher than 0,2 mg/l.
Fluoride ions are found in almost all ground and surface waters. Their concentrations are mainly dependent on hydrogeological conditions and are mostly below 1 mg/t.
Temperature and ionic strength also affect chain tension. Therefore, they must be compatible and kept constant during calibration and measurement. Also, fluoride ion activity is pH dependent.
pH values between 5 and 7 have proven to be the optimal range for a measurement. Special buffer solutions are used to fix the pH value and the activity coefficient.
If the fluoride concentrations in the samples are approximately known at the time of scanning, measurements should begin at the lowest concentration and end at the highest concentration. If a very low concentration is to be measured again after measuring high concentrations, the electrode must be conditioned in between.
