The method can be applied to products in the form of powders, pastes and solutions.

They interfere with Karl Fischer reagent. Alkali metal silicates and carbonates; hydroxides and borates; oxidizing agents, ketones, aldehydes, strong mineral acids and strong bases. Samples containing any of these substances cannot be directly analyzed by this method, in such cases the solvent system and/or the Karl Fischer reagent need to be modified, but this is outside the scope of the procedure and the standard.
