This standard specifies a method using formic acid and zinc chloride to determine the mass percent of viscose or certain types of copper or modal or lyocell in textiles after removal of non-fibrous material.
This standard does not apply to blends where the flax fiber is subject to extreme chemical degradation, or when the viscose, copper, modal or lyocell fiber has been rendered completely insoluble due to the presence of certain permanent finishes or reactive dyes that cannot be completely removed.
After pretreatment with sodium hydroxide the non-cellulosic components of the flax fiber core (pectin, etc.) have been removed, the viscose, cupro or modal or lyocell fiber is dissolved from a conventional dry mass. mixture with a reagent consisting of formic acid and zinc chloride. The residue is collected, washed, dried and weighed; Its adjusted mass is expressed as a percentage of the dry mass of the mixture. Viscose, cupro, modal or lyocell is found with a difference in fiber percentage.
Twenty-five international laboratories participated in this trial. Laboratories had to apply both manual separation and chemical methods on the same linen/linen woven fabric. The nature of the woven fabric allowed the composition to be determined by manual/mechanical separation according to EN ISO 1833-1, but the purpose of the proficiency test was actually to perform the method by chemical analysis.
