EN ISO 307 Plastics - Polyamides - Standard Test Method for Determination of Viscosity Number

EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, provides precise and fast testing services within the scope of EN ISO 307 testing. This standard specifies a method for the determination of the viscosity number of dilute solutions of polyamides in certain solvents.

EN ISO 307 Plastics - Polyamides - Standard Test Method for Determination of Viscosity Number

The method is not applicable to polyamides produced by anionic polymerization of lactams or produced by crosslinking agents; such polyamides are normally insoluble in the specified solvents. The viscosity number is determined according to the general procedure specified in EN ISO 1628‑1, taking into account the specific conditions specified in this standard.

This standard specifies a method for the determination of the viscosity number of dilute solutions of polyamides in certain solvents. Determining the viscosity number of a polyamide provides a value dependent on the molecular mass of the polymer, but not strictly related to the molecular mass.

Additives such as flame retardants and modifiers often interfere with the viscosity measurement and can have an increasing effect in one solvent and a reducing effect in another solvent. The degree of effectiveness depends on the additive, the amount of additive, the presence of other additives and reactions.

The viscosity number of a sample of polyamide measured in a particular solvent, containing additives that interfere with viscosity measurement, represents a specific viscosity number for the polyamide under investigation and the actual measurement conditions. The measured viscosity number cannot in principle be converted from one solvent to another and is only suitable for in-product comparison.

The viscosity number of pure polyamides or polyamides with additives that do not affect the viscosity measurement can be converted from one solvent to another with a general relationship for that type of polyamide.

Even if the test method contains additives that do not interfere with the polyamide viscosity measurement, it can be applied for production control and in-product comparison. It should be understood, however, that deviations in viscosity number may be caused by the polyamide itself, by the effects caused by the additives present, or by a combination thereof.
