IAEA TS-R-1 Regulations for Safe Transport of Radioactive Material Standard Test Method

EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance services within the scope of the IAEA TS-R-1 test standard. These regulations apply to the carriage of radioactive material by all modes on land, water or air, including carriage resulting from the use of radioactive material.

Transport includes all operations and conditions relating to and involved in the movement of radioactive material; these include the design, manufacture, maintenance and repair of packaging and preparation, shipping, loading, handling including in-transit storage, post-storage transport, unloading and receiving at final destination of radioactive material and package loads.

In setting the performance standards contained in this Regulation, a tiered approach is applied, characterized by three general levels of importance:

• Routine transport conditions (uneventful);
• Normal transport conditions (minor mishaps);
• Accident transport conditions.

This regulation does not specify controls such as routing or physical protection that may be established for reasons other than radiological security. Such controls will take into account radiological and non-radiological hazards and will not reduce the safety standards this regulation is intended to provide.
