This test guide is designed to evaluate the effects of prolonged exposure to chemicals on sediment-dwelling larvae of the freshwater dipteran Chironomus sp.
Early-stage chironomid larvae are exposed to at least five concentrations of the test chemical in sediment-water systems. The test substance is added to the sediment and the first instar larvae are then introduced into test beakers where the sediment and water concentrations are stabilized. At the end of the test, the rate of emergence and development of the chironomid is measured. The maximum exposure time is 28 days for C. riparius, C. yoshimatsui and 65 days for C. tentans. The limit test corresponds to a dose level of 1000 mg/kg. Larval survival and weight can also be measured after 10 days if necessary (using additional replicates as appropriate).
