Rheology refers to the analysis of the flow or plastic deformation properties of a fluid relative to shear forces such as rotational torque.

The most common rheological properties are yield stress, relaxation times, viscosity and compatibility. Rheological properties study the behavior of fluids under mechanical loading. A solid structure with a certain shape deforms and stretches when subjected to a load.

Rheology analysis measures the deformation of material under the influence of applied stress by analyzing the internal response of materials to forces. Polymer flow properties are critical in all conversion and manufacturing processes: material is forced to flow and rheological properties determine processability.

Fluidity is an important property in the processing and production of materials in various industries. In this regard, fluid rheology relates to polymer processing and determines stress levels in processes such as extrusion, fiber spinning, and film blowing. Similarly, rheology affects residual stresses, cycle times, and void content in composite machining operations such as blow molding, compression molding, and injection molding.

However, mechanical properties are also very important in the use of polymers and the mechanical behavior is affected by rheology. In addition, rheological measurements are used for product characterization and quality control purposes. Such measurements are often used to determine the interaction of different components of a multicomponent or multiphase mixture and their effects on flow and other properties of such materials.
