TS 4474 Water Quality - Determination of Total Calcium and Magnesium by EDTA Titrimetric Method

EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, offers precise and rapid testing services within the scope of TS 4474 test. This standard includes the titrimetric method of determining the sum of magnesium and calcium concentrations in drinking water, groundwater and surface water using ethylenediaminetetra acetic (EDTA).

TS 4474 Water Quality - Determination of Total Calcium and Magnesium by EDTA Titrimetric Method

It is the soap precipitating capacity of the water, resulting mainly from the dissolved calcium or magnesium salts in a water's hardness. Soap is precipitated by the calcium and magnesium ions that are always present in the water. But this precipitation is also produced by polyvalent metals such as Fe, Al, Mn and Zn, and by hydrogen ions.

Hardness is expressed as the total concentration of calcium and magnesium ions in terms of calcium carbonate. However, it may also include other hardening ions present in demonstrable amounts.

The full name of the chemical compound known as EDTA for short is ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid. The area where this acidic compound is mostly used is the studies of determining the hardness of water. Especially calcium is an element that increases the total hardness level of water. However, the calcium hardness in the water can be eliminated with some chemicals. For this, the hardness level of the water must be known first. EDTA titrimetric method is at the top of the tests performed for this purpose in authorized laboratories.

The EDTA compound first combines with calcium when it is added to water containing calcium and magnesium. If the pH of the water is high enough, calcium is determined immediately with this method. Because magnesium precipitates in water as magnesium hydroxide.

If the hardness of the water used in the textile industry is high, this will shorten the life of the fabrics and cause them to wear out quickly. For this reason, waters with high pH value, that is, waters with high total calcium and magnesium content, negatively affect product quality.
