Spray drying is a common process for particle formation and drying. It is a good solution for the continuous production of dry solids in powder or agglomerated particle form from a liquid feedstock. The feedstock may include solutions, emulsions and suspensions.
Fires and explosions are a great risk to people, the environment and facilities. The main reason for this is sometimes significant heat and pressure and combustion products. In the event of a fire, the temperatures generated inside the spray dryers can cause parts of the installation to fail and thus be destroyed.
In the event of an explosion, the pressures created may exceed the power of the installation (unless it is designed to be explosion-proof) and thus cause the installation to rupture. Such explosions cause additional hazards such as debris and flames emanating from the Installation, which may cause injury to any personnel in the vicinity. Fires and explosions can spread to the entire installation and connected installations if equipment-specific safety precautions are not taken.
The less compact the accumulated combustible dust, the more violent the combustion reaction will be after ignition. Most dust burns quite slowly when accumulated. Glowing and smoldering combustion is characteristic. In spray dryers, the air flow will accelerate the combustion to flaming. The elevated dust/air mixtures will burn at such an extreme rate that an explosion will likely occur.
