AfPS GS 2014 Testing and Evaluation of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) During GS Marking

AfPS has established the requirements for PAH testing during certification of the GS mark as a specification according to the art. 21 product safety law paragraph 1 no. 3 application is carried out through this PAH document.

Products must comply with legal requirements, chemical prohibition regulation and art to avoid health risks. This document, and in particular the test instructions, specify requirements for PAH levels in products. In addition, the document harmonizes the testing methodology for evaluation by GS institutions.

The GS organization should consider the following steps both in the process of issuing a new GS mark and in monitoring existing GS mark certificates:

• Risk assessment;
• Categorization;
• Testing and evaluation.

The GS organization should carry out a risk assessment and in doing so identify and keep track of which relevant contact/grip and work surfaces of the product will be considered for testing and which will not. If the relevant "Erfahrungsaustauschkreis" ("Experience Exchange Group", EK) has already defined a procedure for the product or product group regarding contact/grip and work surfaces, a risk assessment should not be applied where appropriate. A reference to the definition of the Annex should be included in the documentation accordingly.

Materials that are inaccessible or that can only be reached using instruments do not need to be evaluated, except for samples with a distinctive odor. In principle, all contact/grip and work surfaces that may come into direct contact with the skin or enter the mouth during appropriate or foreseeable use should be considered.
