BS 6920 Water Quality Tests

EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance services within the scope of BS 6920 standard. The BS 6920 standard, designed by the British Standards Institute (BSI), includes the assessment and reporting of the suitability of non-metallic products for use in contact with water intended for human consumption, in terms of their impact on water quality.

BS 6920 Water Quality Tests

Within the scope of the standard, the effect of the material on the smell and taste of water, its effect on the appearance of water, its effect on increasing microbial growth, the release of substances harmful to human health from the material and the release of toxic metals are tested, and also the organic substances that can pass into the water are examined by the GCMS identification method.

All non-metallic materials that come into contact with water for domestic use or food production are required to comply with the requirements of BS 6920. BS 6920 sets out a set of test methods evaluating the suitability of non-metallic materials, the tested parameters are as follows.

BS 6920-2.2 - Water Smell and Taste

This test determines whether a material will impart a noticeable odor or taste to non-chlorinated or chlorinated water. Evaluation is done by 3 trained panelists. Testing time can take up to 14 business days.

BS 6920-2.3 - Appearance of Water

This test determines the effect a material has on the color and turbidity of water. Testing time can take up to 10 business days.

BS 6920-2.4 - Growth of Microorganisms in Water

This test determines whether a material can support the growth of microorganisms in water and is obtained by measuring the use or uptake of dissolved oxygen from the test water. The testing period can take 7 to 9 weeks.

BS 6920-2.5 - Cytotoxicity

This test is a simple toxicity assessment performed by immersing the sample in water and evaluating the extract water for any toxic reactions with tissue culture. Testing time can take up to 5 business days.

BS 6920-2.6 - Extraction of Metals

This test determines whether a material leaches metals into water. The test extract is evaluated for Aluminum, Antimony, Arsenic, Boron, Cadmium, Chromium, Iron, Lead, Manganese, Mercury, Nickel, and Selenium. Testing time can take up to 21 business days.

Our organization also provides testing services within the scope of BS 6920 Water Quality Tests, within the framework of laboratory services of materials. Do not hesitate to contact our laboratory EUROLAB for your testing and certification requests.
