EN ISO 14644-17 Clean Rooms and Associated Controlled Environments - Part 17: Particle Deposition Rate Applications Test

EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, provides precise and fast testing services within the scope of EN ISO 14644-17 testing. This standard provides direction on the interpretation and application of particle deposition rate measurement results on one or more sensitive surfaces in a cleanroom as part of a pollution control program. It provides some instructions on how to affect the particle deposition rate and how to reduce the risk of particle contamination on sensitive surfaces.

EN ISO 14644-17 Clean Rooms and Associated Controlled Environments - Part 17: Particle Deposition Rate Applications Test

This standard provides information on how a cleanroom user can use particle deposition rate measurements to determine the limits that can be set for macroparticles on sensitive surfaces. It also provides a risk assessment method by which an acceptable risk of particle deposition on sensitive surfaces in a cleanroom can be determined and methods that can be used to reduce the rate of particle deposition if this is not achieved.

An alternative to the particle deposition rate is the particle blackening rate, which determines the rate at which particles spread over a surface area over time. The particle blackening rate can be used in a similar way to the particle release rate and the required particle blackening rate for a given surface can be calculated and the risk from deposited particles can be reduced.

This standard:

  • It does not provide a method for classifying a cleanroom by particle deposition rate or particle blackening rate;
  • Consider the accumulation of direct microbe-bearing particles, although they can be handled as particulate;
  • Consider surface build-up by contact, such as when personnel touch a product and contamination is transferred.

Methods for measuring the rate of particle deposition in a cleanroom or clean zone are provided in this document. They are used to monitor the cleanroom and clean zones to ensure the required particle deposition rate is achieved during cleanroom operation and to demonstrate continuous control of airborne contamination. Monitoring the particle settling rate also allows PDR peaks to be correlated with activities to identify sources of contamination and indicate what changes in operating procedures are needed to reduce the risk of contamination.
