The silk fiber is dissolved with 75% (mass fraction) sulfuric acid from the known dry mass of the mixture. The residue is collected, washed, dried and weighed; the corrected mass if necessary, expressed as a percentage of the dry mass of the mixture. The difference is the percentage of silk.

Prepare this reagent by carefully adding 700 ml of sulfuric acid to 350 ml of distilled water while cooling. After cooling this solution to room temperature, dilute it to 1 with water. Concentration is not critical in the range of 73% to 77% (mass fraction) sulfuric acid.
