EN ISO 18846 Solid Biofuels - Determination of Fines Content in Pellet Amounts

EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, offers precise and fast testing services within the scope of EN ISO 18846 testing. This International Standard describes a method for the manual determination of fines content in pellet samples.

EN ISO 18846 Solid Biofuels - Determination of Fines Content in Pellet Amounts

Fines content is defined as the percentage by mass of material with a size below 3,15 mm. Fines content is an important parameter as excessive amounts of fines in pellet shipments increase the risk of dust explosion and also pose a health problem if the dust is inhaled.

A test sample is sieved by manually shaking a 3,15 mm diameter round hole sieve in horizontal movements and the mass of the material passing through it is determined.

The laboratory sample used to determine the fines content shall be obtained in accordance with ISO 18135. The sampling strategy shall be such as to ensure that special provisions are made regarding the tendency for fines to stratify in a shipment of pellets. For example, the entire amount of pellets in a bag should be sampled to obtain a representative test sample.

Due to the special provisions required for sampling to determine fines, the combined (raw) sample may be very large. The pooled sample may be divided into one or more smaller test portions using a sample division procedure in accordance with ISO 14780.
