The test method described in this standard provides information on the fusion and melting behavior of composite inorganic components of solid biofuel ash at high temperatures.

The testing method is empirical. The ash used for the test is a homogeneous material prepared from the fuel by ashing it at 550°C (alternatively ashing temperatures of 710°C or 815°C can be used). The determination is carried out in a controlled atmosphere at a controlled heating rate. In contrast, under full-scale conditions, complex combustion and fusion processes involve heterogeneous particle mixtures, variable heating rates, and gas compositions.

The characteristic temperatures determined in the test can be used to compare the tendency of ashes from different types and qualities of solid biofuels to form molten deposits or cause bed agglomeration during heating.

For some ashes produced at 550°C, the deformation temperature may be difficult to determine due to the release of carbon dioxide from the carbonates in the ashes and strong shrinkage of the test pieces. Ashing at higher temperatures removes carbonates from the ash but also removes the possible content of low-melting salts. For some purposes (such as investigating glass melting problems with wood pellets), higher ashing temperatures such as (710 ± 10)°C or (815 ± 10)°C may be used if specified in the test report.
