ISO 16000-14 Indoor Air - Part 14: High Resolution Extraction - Cleaning and Analysis Gas Chromatography and Mass Spectrometry Testing

EUROLAB, together with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, provides precise and fast testing services within the scope of ISO 16000-14 testing. ISO 16000-14 specifies extraction, cleaning and analysis procedures for the determination of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs), and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs) collected from indoor air. The method combines specific analyzes with high resolution gas chromatography combined with high resolution mass spectrometry (HRGC/HRMS).

The method provides accurate quantitative data for tetra- to decachlorobiphenyls and tetra- to octachloro-dibenzo-p-dioxins/dibenzofurans (total concentrations for each isomeric series).

This part of ISO 16000 applies to the extraction, cleaning and analysis of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs) and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs) from indoor air. Sampling of PCBs, PCDDs/PCDFs is described in ISO 16000-13. Both ISO 16000-13 and ISO 16000-14 are part of the complete PCB/PCDD/PCDF measurement procedure.

Separation, detection and quantification of PCBs/PCDDs/PCDFs collected from indoor air on particulate filters supported by combined and co-extracted polyurethane foam sampling medium is performed by HRGC/HRMS using the isotope dilution technique.

Extraction procedures are normally based on Soxhlet extraction with toluene or an equivalent solvent. Sample cleaning is usually accomplished by multi-column liquid chromatographic techniques based on specific adsorbents. The main purpose of the cleaning procedure is to remove co-aggregated compounds and contaminants that could overload the separation method, interfere with the assay, or severely affect the performance of the identification and quantification steps. Furthermore, the enrichment of the analytes in the final sample extract is achieved. PCBs are separated from PCDDs/PCDFs by desorption with different volumes of solvent on an alumina column.
