TS 8195 Water Analysis - Guidelines for Determination of Total Organic Carbon (TOC) and Dissolved Organic Carbon (DOC)

EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, provides precise and fast testing services within the scope of TS 8195 test. This standard covers a guide for the determination of organic carbon in drinking water, groundwater, surface water, seawater and water. While dealing with the definitions, interactions, reagents and sample pretreatment of water samples with organic carbon content ranging from 0,3 mg/l to 1000 mg/l, the lower value only applies in special cases, e.g. drinking water. this is measured with instruments capable of measuring low levels.

TS 8195 Water Analysis - Guidelines for Determination of Total Organic Carbon (TOC) and Dissolved Organic Carbon (DOC)

In addition to organic carbon, the water sample may contain carbon dioxide or carbonic acid ions. Prior to TOC determination, it is essential to remove this inorganic carbon by purging the acidified sample with a gas free of CO2 and organic compounds. Alternatively, both total carbon (TC) and total inorganic carbon (TIC) can be determined and organic carbon content (TOC) calculated by subtracting total inorganic carbon from TC. This method is particularly suitable for samples where the total inorganic carbon is less than the TOC.

Cleanable organic materials such as benzene, toluene, cyclohexane, and chloroform may partially escape during the stripping process. In the presence of these substances, the TOC concentration is determined separately or the differential method (TC 2 TIC = TOC) can be applied. Using the differential method, the value of TOC must be higher or at least similar in size than the TIC.

Total organic carbon (TOC) is a measure of the carbon content of dissolved and undissolved organic matter in water. It does not provide information about the nature of organic matter.

The application of the ultraviolet method with only oxygen as the oxidant is limited to low polluted waters containing low concentrations of TOC. Inorganic carbon is removed by acidification and leaching or determined separately.
